Health insurance and Medicare in New Jersey.
New Jersey runs its own marketplace and its own subsidy on top of the federal one, and it keeps enrolling later into January than most of the country. Advice written for HealthCare.gov gets New Jersey wrong on both counts.
Your deadlines are not the federal ones
Get Covered New Jersey’s Open Enrollment normally runs November 1 through January 31, later than the federal deadline. Enroll by December 31 for coverage that starts January 1 — New Jersey gives you two weeks longer than Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and the first month’s premium has to be paid by then too.
Coverage in New Jersey is bought through Get Covered New Jersey, which the state runs itself. That is a different site, a different login and a different calendar from HealthCare.gov, and it is the single most common thing people get wrong here.
New Jersey had not published its 2027 dates when this page was written on September 2, 2026 — check Get Covered New Jersey for the current year before you rely on a date.
If a letter says your NJ FamilyCare is ending
If NJ FamilyCare tells you your coverage is ending, that is a special enrollment window opening, typically 60 days from the date on the notice. It is one of the few times of year you can enroll outside the normal window, and it closes quietly.
New Jersey adds its own money on top
New Jersey Health Plan Savings is a state subsidy that stacks on the federal one, so the number you see on a national quoting site can be higher than what you would actually pay here. Households that looked priced out somewhere else are worth re-checking on the state site.
Medicare in New Jersey
For the 2027 plan year there are 20 products from 5 organizations available in Burlington County. What is on offer changes from one county to the next, so the number where you live may look nothing like that one — the plan finder prices your own ZIP, your own doctors and your own prescriptions.
Across the whole state
Coverage is written statewide in New Jersey, so where you live in it does not change what you can get — Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, Woodbridge, Trenton, Camden, Toms River and Cherry Hill included, and everywhere between them. Everything happens by phone, text, email or video, in English or Spanish.
Everything is available here: marketplace health, Medicare, small-group, life, final expense, retirement, dental, vision, and accident or hospital indemnity.
Start with your own situation, not the state average.
Say what changed — a letter, a birthday, a job, a premium — and you get a straight answer about what New Jersey actually allows you to do about it.
