Questions

The questions people ask before they pick a plan.

Useful whether or not you ever call. If one of these sounds like your situation, that is reason enough to go and check it.

I just lost HUSKY, NJ FamilyCare or Medical Assistance. How long do I have?

In Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania you generally have 60 days to pick a new plan — and the clock starts on the termination date printed on your letter, not the day you noticed. That catches a lot of people out.

Worth knowing: the federal marketplace allows 90 days after a Medicaid loss, but CT, NJ and PA each run their own exchange and use 60. Following national advice will give you the wrong deadline here.

I’m locked out of my Access Health CT / Get Covered NJ / Pennie account.

Resetting your password usually won’t fix it. The common cause is failed identity verification, and that clears by uploading a photo ID — not by trying again. People often reset the password five times before anyone explains this.

What does it cost to work with you?

Nothing. You don’t pay us — the insurance carrier does. The plan costs exactly the same whether you enroll through us or on your own, which is why we have no reason to put you in the wrong plan.

I’m turning 65. What do I actually need to do?

You get a seven-month window around your 65th birthday — three months before, your birthday month, and three months after. Enrolling early in that window avoids a gap in coverage.

Separately, Medicare’s annual enrollment runs October 15 to December 7 every year. That’s when people already on a plan can change it for the following year.

Is a $0 premium Medicare plan actually free?

The premium is zero; the plan isn’t necessarily cheap. What matters is the network your doctors are in, the copays, and how your specific prescriptions are covered. A $0 plan can cost more over a year than one with a monthly premium.

This is why we ask for your prescription list and your doctors before saying anything about which plan fits.

I only have four employees. Can I even offer health insurance?

Yes. Small-group coverage is priced per person by age, so a younger team often quotes lower than owners expect.

There are also setups where you contribute a fixed monthly amount and each employee picks their own plan. That gives you a predictable budget instead of an open-ended bill, and it’s usually the option owners haven’t heard of.

When should I look at my group renewal?

90 to 120 days before it renews. Three days before is a scramble with no real options. A few months out, you can actually compare and change something.

What’s the difference between a deductible and an out-of-pocket max?

The deductible is what you pay before the plan starts sharing costs. The out-of-pocket maximum is the most you can pay in a year — once you hit it, covered care is paid at 100%.

Two plans with the same premium can differ a lot here, and that difference usually decides which one was actually the better deal.

My income changed. Does that affect my subsidy?

It can, in both directions. Marketplace financial help is based on your estimated income for the year. If yours went down, you may qualify for more help than you’re getting. If it went up and you don’t report it, you could owe some back at tax time.

Reporting a change is quick, and it’s much better than finding out in April.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes — start to finish, not just a greeting. Applications, calls with the carrier, the paperwork, and explaining what a letter actually says. Nothing gets lost in translation.

Can I enroll any time, or only during open enrollment?

Marketplace plans have an annual open enrollment in the fall. Outside it, you need a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving states, getting married, having a baby, or an income change that affects eligibility.

Losing Medicaid counts. So does losing a job plan. If something changed, it’s worth asking rather than assuming the door is closed.

Do you sell auto or homeowners insurance?

No. This agency handles health, Medicare, small-group, life and retirement coverage only. Property and casualty — cars, homes, business property — takes a different license, so that is a different agent.
